I received a call from a customer of mine a few days back. He wanted a replacement water pump for his Powertech 6081 John Deere generator engine. I had the serial number of the engine, and he even went as far as providing the stamford generator details.
However, i had to send him back for additional information.
This is common problem that is usually encountered when sourcing replacement water pumps for John Deere engines. The serial number of the engine is not sufficient. Of optimal importance here is the casting number on the old water pump. This casting number is what is used to identify the correct pump. No serial number can provide this.
This is also the issue when selecting cylinder heads and blocks. For example, 6081 engines used for marine, and generator engines will have slight differences. Ensuring the correct replacement block is chosen is as simple as corresponding the casting numbers.
